In the Louvre there are thousands and thousands of paintings hanging on the walls (did I mention thousands??) but this one in particular caught my eye. I love the concept of paintings within paintings and how it represented the very Louvre I was standing in. It hasn’t been until years later that technology has caught up and I was able to “google image search” this to find out who painted it. Turns out it’s from 1758! What a wonder it is that we have technology AND can appreciate a piece of art painted centuries ago today.

“Picture Gallery with Views of Modern Rome or simply Modern Rome is a painting by Italian artist Giovanni Paolo Panini. It is currently owned and on display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The painting shows the arrangement of paintings originally commissioned by Count de Stainville, later the Duke de Choiseul. He was the ambassador to Rome from between 1753 and 1757. The Duke is seated on an armchair, in the painting. Among some of the works depicted in this work are, Michelangelo’s Moses, Bernini’s statute of Constantine, David, Apollo and Daphne.
