Finding Wonder 10 of 100

Unplanned wonders are the greatest. ESPECIALLY when shared with old friends.

After a late lunch with J2 & Jas, we found ourselves at the Loose Moose with the unplanned chance to experience a vintage 1978 Glenrothes whisky. I’m no “wh-iskyconnoisseur (or even a lover to be honest) but it was fun and I’m an appreciator of things that have taken time to develop into the things are to become. Much like the best things in life. Much like friendship.

These words are from John Wooden, Head Coach of University of California for over 30 years. Born in 1910, he married his sweetheart at 21 years old and remained married for 53 years until his wife passed away. The words above were given to him by his father as the “Seven Point Creed” upon his grammer school graduation. Below is a TED talk he gave in 2001.

be true to yourself, help others, make friendship a fine art, drink deeply from good books, especially the bible, build a shelter against a rainy day, give thanks for blessings and pray for guidance every day – john wooden

Friendship is one of the most beautiful and treasured wonders a person will ever be blessed to have in this life. You may never know how it is formed, but it is the stuff that makes the heart run over.

Photo was captured from the banks of Hirosaki Park as dusk fell. These three guys were clearly the greatest of friends and it was amusing to watch their interactions as they attempted to navigate the canal and their ship of the high seas.

This photo was taken on dusk, as evening fell across Victoria Bay. Hong Kong is such a vibrant, bustling little city that the serenity of this moment is almost at odds against what springs to my mind when I think of HK.

This was a moment captured on a perfect summer’s day on the French Riviera. Riding our bikes along the footpath, these lads caught our attention as they threw themselves fearlessly into the clear waters below. We couldn’t help but stop and watch in wonder and amusement, especially as a couple of the younger boys would walk to the edge and then back away several times before finally making the jump.

Quote is from a piece written in 2008 by one of the founder of GitHub, Tom Preston-Warner, on how he turned down a $300K job at Microsoft to do his own thing. Makes for an interesting read.

In the end, just as Indiana Jones could never turn down the opportunity to search for the Holy Grail, I could no less turn down the chance to work for myself on something I truly love, no matter how safe the alternative might be. When I”m old and dying, I plan to look back on my life and say “wow, that was an adventure, not wow I sure felt safe” – Tom Preston-Warner

Finding Wonder 3 of 100 Toyville Tokyo DisneySea Japan

Running for Toyville

Outside of professional marathons, you’ve never seen grown adults stampede so politely like you have at the daily open of Tokyo DisneySea.

Wanting to make the most of our one day at Tokyo DisneySea we’d read up on TripAdvisor and had our game plan sorted. It was common knowledge you needed to be in line well before the ticketing booths opened if you wanted any hope of getting a ticket to half the rides before 4pm. We were close to the front gate and as we stood in line, all heads craned forward to peer at the guests who were staying in the Disney resorts as we watched them get VIP early entrance.

Although we couldn’t understand a word of Japanese around us, it was plain as day everyone had the same thought “c’mon…let us in already!?”

Finding Wonder 2 of 100 - These beautiful days John Muir

Some days you hit the weather jackpot and today was one of them. Blue skies and  GLORIOUS. It would have been criminal to stay inside…

These beautiful days do not exist as mere pictures – maps hung upon the walls of memory to brighten at times when touched by association or will. They saturate themselves into every part of the body and live always – John Muir
